Miss Gigi will be part of our Sunday School!

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

We’re very happy to report that Miss Gigi, well known and loved by all of our Musical Theater Workshop participants, will now be part of our Sunday School curriculum! Once a month, starting September, Miss Gigi will join the Sunday School children and lead them in song and dance! And yes, parents will get to see the results in church every once in a while!

Come join the fun! All are welcome!

New Sunday School program starting Sept. 12

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Starting September 12, when we kick off our new Sunday School year with our beloved Rallye Day event, we’ll introduce our new Sunday School curriculum. It’s called SPARK, by Augsburg Fortress. It’s a faith formation program designed for children ages 2 through Grade 6, that encourages children to interact with God’s Word, and explore scripture and it’s lessons through exciting activities. Check it out at www.activefaith.org.

Sunday School is held during the Worship Service, in 2 – 3 different age groups, depending on attendance. It takes place in the cheery classrooms of our preschool, Creative Playtime. All are welcome!

A first glance at our new Social Hall

Friday, August 6th, 2010

We have emptied the attic and re-arranged the offices and shredded old documents and dusted off the past and are almost ready for the start of the big renovations! Here is a look at what’s to come: our architect’s artistic rendition of our new gathering space. You can see how the hand-hewn beams of our original chapel will be visible again in all their splendor, possibly even with the original chandelier! We can’t wait to see them come back to light. Also, we will finally get our wheelchair accessible bathroom, which was painfully overdue, in particular since the installation of our chair lift to the church entrance!

Pardon our appearance while we go through all these changes! It’ll be well worth the dust and hassle!

‘I am the Vine, you are the Branches’

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Here are some photos of our beautiful sanctuary tapestry, a rendition of John 15:5, ‘ I am the Vine, you are the Branches’. The tapestry was a gift for our 60th Anniversary last year, and was made by renowned textile artists Alibay and Saule Bapanov from Kazakhstan. It was the first time they had been asked to make a Christian motif, and they were honored and excited to be entrusted with this work. They did a lot of research on the colors of the church year, Christian symbolism, and even grew a vine in their yard in Almaty to get it all right! Come in and judge for yourself if you think they did good! (We think it’s fabulous!)

Back-to-School donations

Come join us in providing back-packs and school supplies to the New LIFE School in the Bronx!

All August long, we’ll collect the items that come in and display them around the altar, until in early September, they’ll be picked up and driven to the school, to hopefully give a lot of children a better start into the new school year.

The New Life School  is a state/publicly funded special education program for students diagnosed with learning, speech and psychiatric disabilities.  The school serves children between the ages of 11-21, in grades 6-12. It is part of Lutheran Social Services of New York.

So come in, pick a back-pack leaflet in the Narthex that will explain what items to buy, and join this worthy cause! And we get to enjoy a colorfully decorated altar all August long in the process!
